Artist Collective M12 launches the "Ornitarium" in Denmark
19 July 2011
Over the past 9 weeks, artists from the Colorado based art collective, M12, have been creating a site- specific architectural sculpture and functional bird hide in a wetlands area near Denmark. The Ornitarium is the latest development arising from a series of regional projects in IASKA's spaced: art out of place program, and will be launched on 28th July 2011 on site at the Wetlands Education Centre in Denmark, in WA's south-west.Since their arrival in Denmark in early June, artists Richard Saxton, Kirsten Gerdes Stoltz and David Wyrick have immersed themselves in Denmark's history, environment and wildlife, held artists' talks with the community and engaged the help of local high school students in the development of the Ornitarium.
Saxton explains, the project was inspired by "local knowledge --specifically knowledge related to birds that populate the regions wetlands areas, regional timber types, and building methods. The work is designed and built as a bird hide and as a social space. Ornitarium has a large front wall that stands as the dividing line between human habitat and wetland habitat, and a platform that invites visitors to spend time around the structure; encouraging learning and providing a catalyst for developing a deeper connection to the Denmark environment and community."
When asked how he hopes the Denmark community will respond to the work, Saxton replied: "The Ornitarium is designed with a number of functions immediately available--a space for looking at and studying birds, a gathering place during a bushwalk, a place to spend the night if one wishes, a quiet spot for contemplation or a quick nap. It has been our intention to make a structure that is useful and adaptable over time so that it will fit the needs of the community and the wetlands site. The Ornitarium is a gift to the Wetlands Education Centre and the community of Denmark, our hope is that the community will enjoy the work as much as we have developing it."
M12's residency in Denmark is one of 16 projects in IASKA's spaced biennial program. Invited artists undertake residencies in communities across Western Australia as well as several overseas locations. By living and working on location for a minimum of 10 weeks, artists are able to create works that meaningfully engage with the local specificity of social and environmental contexts. Spaced culminates in a group exhibition featuring all 16 artworks at the Fremantle Arts Centre in February 2012.
M12's residency is supported by Denmark Arts and Green Skills.

Kate McMillian secures $20,000 from BHP to support arts programs for Aboriginal people in Leonora.
17 May 2011
Kate has thrown herself into her exploration of and provision of opprtunities for engagement with the Leonora community. Currently, she has initiated artworkshops for women in the Detention Centre, and is exploring the provision of basketry and painting workshops with the Aboriginal community. The Shire has been very supportive, and the Detention Centre has agreed to supply art materials. Although only in the early stages, this project like the Narrogin project, is hot with possibilities. One of the threads Kate has managed to weave into gold is $20,000 funding from BHP to support Artsource to manage arts/health development programs for local Aboriginal people.Says Kate, "The main community project I have been working on is to respond to the lack of art projects for the Aboriginal community. I have been working to set up a partnership between BHP and Artsource to deliver ongoing professional development workshops culminating in potential exhibitions and the development of a more permanent cultural centre. Initially we will be working with MEEDAC, the local Aboriginal employment and education service. MEEDAC will be providing access to their enormous space for workshops and the possibility of a small retail facility. Well-known fibre artist Nalda Searles will hold the first workshop in June. Nalda will be drawing on her basket making skills and the use of the local Spinifex grass. Already thirty people have registered. The aim is to have three workshops run by September and to then apply for project money to continue them with more defined outcomes. The advice of Kado and Deeva Muir has been instrumental in ensuring the project is community led."
Julia Davis has published a book based on the Mukinbudin residency.

Jakub Szczesny and Kaja Pawelek presented a public art concept to a packed and very enthusiastic audience at a local community gathering.
11 April 2011
On Tuesday 5th April, Jakub Szczesny and Kaja Pawelek presented the preliminary ideas that are already emerging from their first three weeks in Narrogin to a packed and very enthusiastic audience at a local community gathering. The artists have been overwhelmed by the hospitality and generosity of their local hosts - meeting new people every day, driving huge farm machines, flying over the landscape, and spent a night in the Dryandra Forest with local Nyoongar people while exploring local issues and workshopping ideas. This rich feast of experience was due to dedication and superb organising skills of Karen Keeley from the CY O'Connor Institute, Geri Hayden from CANWA, and our Art Project Assistant, Reuben Ha. Jakub and Kaya have been accompanied on this visit by Matylda Salajowski who is making a film about the project for Canal European television. Jakub and Kaja will present a seminar at Curtin University School of Art before returning to Poland.

IASKA's first SPACED project has started!
16 February 2011
Tessa Zettel and Karl Kohe (makeshift) arrived in Esperance a week ago to begin their project based at the Cannery Arts Centre. The intense wind in Esperance has led them to start exploring the potential of thaumatropes - a Victorian toy by which two images (on reverse sides of a spinning piece of paper) are seen to become one.
