Alex Spremberg
Making Hay
July
2000
Spremberg's spray painted hay bales gently mock the austere approach of
Minimalism's masters such as Carl Andre and Donald Judd. These works are
strikingly elegant in their simplicity, and are reminiscent of the large
stacks of neatly assembled hay bales scattered across the flat landscape
of the Western Australian Wheatbelt. Through this work, the artist succeeds
in creating an imaginative association between the everyday reality of
farming life and dominant trends in contemporary art.
